Modbus Data Concentrators

Modbus Data Concentrators (MDC)

Modbus is the most common industrial protocol, and most PLCs, controllers, and industrial software can communicate using this standard. Modbus Data Concentrators (MDC) improve the efficiency of SCADA software and control computers by significantly reducing the number of directly monitored devices, making data collection much faster and more efficient.

An MDC module assumes the role of a Modbus Master in the network and is programmed to continuously poll multiple Modbus slave devices in series, automatically storing their values in a shared memory map. Since serial communication is typically a slow process, having multiple MDC modules query the serial devices one by one is much more efficient than having a single main computer or SCADA server do it directly.

Subsequently, the SCADA computer only needs to query the MDC module to obtain consolidated data from dozens of machines simultaneously, greatly increasing the speed and performance of the process. When new locations or additional equipment are integrated into the system, extra MDC modules are simply added at each station, with minimal impact on the overall data collection time.
